Do you love travelling like a queen, but don't have the money to do it often? It's an issue many of us have, because quite simply travelling and staying in nice hotels is expensive. You can do it on a shoestring if you're willing to head out with a backpack and nothing else, staying in hostels or on friends' couches, and you can have an amazing experience that way. Let's face it, though, we all like a bit of luxury and pampering. Here are five tips to help you get luxury on a budget while travelling.
Traveling Internationally usually means different electricity voltage. Basically your flat iron or cell phone charger needs a plug adapter in order to work. You can get Travel Adapter Plugs at Amazon or Ebay. They're found easily in big cities or at International Airports, trust me it's cheaper on Amazon.
Extra Discounts If you are an Auto Club Member, Senior Citizen, or Youth (usually under 25) you get better rates for hotels, airline travel etc. Also invest in a book such as the Entertainment Book which has saved me lots of money for my domestic travel trips. This is a good investment because it can save you money even when you're not traveling. (Restaurants, Oil changes, Nails, Hotels, Car Rentals and much more).
Bring your own pillow and blanket. Have you ever wondered if that pillow now snug up against your face was drooled on by the previous passenger who help your seat? Or did you ever think that maybe the blanket tucked under your chin was used as a towel to wipe the sweat from the previous ticket-holder's brow or maybe even more odoriferous places on his body? Despite the effort that airlines have made in providing these amenities to passengers, I am grossed out by the prospect that pillows and blankets aren't always cleaned between uses. With these disgusting thoughts in mind, I highly recommend two packable, lightweight, cozy items for the traveler: the Cocoon Coolmax Travel Blanket and the Cocoon Ultralite Aircore Travel Pillow. Both are very compact and the pillow can even by adjusted by inflating and deflating it.
Hotels are feeling the pinch nowadays too. To take full advantage of this, once you find a hotel that you like, give them a call. And not through their 1-800 customer service phone number. Find the phone number of the location where you want to stay and talk to someone at that location. Ask if there are any special promotions or perks not listed on their website. More often than not, this person will have the authority to give you special treatment.
Be flexible with your travel planning. By being open to flying out of a less commercial airport, or staying in a neighboring city that borders the touristy city, you will save money. Many people want to go to San Francisco but cannot afford the pricey hotel rooms in the city. Consider staying in neighboring Berkely and taking public transportation into San Francisco. Neighboring cities often have the same "feel" as the touristy cities, yet the local businesses are more accommodating and even grateful for your business. You are more apt to be treated like royalty because the locals like you being there, rather than being an annoyance, aka "just another tourist". Minor travel adjustments such as this can save you hundreds on your trip, while still being able to vacation in the city of your choice.
